The Knowledge and Policy Management Initiative (KAPOMI) was incorporated in Nigeria in November, 2007 (company limited by Guarantee) as a non-profit, non-partisan, non-religious, independent, international organization devoted to the promotion and conduct of research, training and advocacy in knowledge and policy management. Prior to its incorporation in 2007, KAPOMI existed for 5 years as Knowledge and Policy Management Association (KAPOMA), an independent think tank of associated intellectuals coming together to be useful to the society. KAPOMI is an organization devoted to knowledge and policy management research, capacity building, advocacy and networking.
Among think-tanks located in Nigeria and West Africa, it is distinguished by its specialization in issues relating to the real economy – knowledge and policy management and emphasis on national, regional and global dimensions of these issues, including policy development and analysis and knowledge management. Complementing this primary focus are other programmes in community service and youth development, budgeting and public expenditure management, politics and governance, and use of Policy Dialogues and pure advocacy as effective instrument of promoting change. KAPOMI’s envisions a society with policies made out of results from evidence based research and policy dialogues.
Within the period of its incorporation, the Initiative has emerged as the leading force in the promotion of change in Nigeria. Besides organizing conferences and workshops, KAPOMI has been active in promoting public policy dialogue, and its fellows serve in several government committees as well as nurture effective networking within and outside of Nigeria. Currently, the Initiative is initiating and facilitating the setting up of the South East Development Forum - network of 58 institutions/organizations involved in development work – research, teaching, health, NGOs, the Press, organized private sector, universities, international organizations with the objective of promoting synergies and complementarities within the network, and promotion of public policy dialogue. The Initiative serves as the secretariat. The Initiative has enormous potentials, and there is increasing demand for its services. But it needs to be significantly strengthened to be able to respond to some of these demands.
